Salvation Experience:  I grew up in a Christian home in rural SE Alabama.  In the early 50’s our parents decided, after becoming affluent enough to own a car and to buy gasoline to drive the 20 miles round trip from home to Union Springs, that we would attend First Methodist Church weekly. This was in lieu of sporadically attending on a rotational basis the community Baptist and Methodist Churches. After a year or so of attending Church and SS in town,  I attended “Confirmation” classes when I was 13 and was baptized as a member of First Methodist Church.

When I was 15, during a summer revival, I accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior.  This decision made a great impact on my life and the direction for my life changed dramatically.  As a pre-teen and teenager my goal in life was to quit school at 16, join the Navy and afterwards come home and farm with my father.  After accepting Jesus as Savior I began to feel that God was calling me to continue my education and I began to take academic issues more seriously and felt that God was calling me to go into a career that required a degree in Agriculture.  I was able to use my limited athletic skills and hard work ethic instilled by my parents to get a College Education playing football.  This led me to Jones County Jr. College in Ellisville, Ms and then on to McNeese State College in Lake Charles, La.  I completed my BS degree in four years using an Athletic Scholarship playing football to pay for my room, board, laundry, tuition and books.  During my Sophomore year, I met Rachel and we started dating in December 1958 and were married after my Junior year in May 1960.  We moved to Auburn AL for Rachel to finish her BS degree and obtain a MS degree and I received my MS degree.  While in Auburn, I was Baptized by immersion by Dr. John Jeffers at FBC Auburn AL.

Work/Ministry Experiences: 1938-1960 Dairy and beef cattle family farm and part-time work after school and Saturday’s at the local Farm Supply Coop.  During graduate school at Auburn and LSU I worked as a Research Associate and went to Grad School part-time except one year at LSU when I was on a Research Assistantship in order to meet Residency requirements and finish my Research project.  I was on the faculty at LSU as an Instructor for four years, two years at Auburn University as State Extension Dairy Specialist, two years in Ohio with an artificial insemination Cooperative as Sales Manager and Assistant General Manager.  In September 1977, we came to the University of Georgia as Assistant Professor in the Animal and Dairy Science Dept. in the College of Ag.   December 1, 1999 I retired after 23 years, as Professor Emeritus.

Work experiences have involved Teaching, Research and Extension at the University of Georgia, LSU and Auburn University.  The two years in Industry allowed me to go places and see aspects of the US Dairy Industry that I otherwise maybe never have seen or done.  This experience in Academia provided the experience and professional reputation to open doors for a distinguished International service in Venezuela, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and S. Korea.  God has truly blessed me by allowing me to do things and go places that I never dreamed of doing as a poor farm boy that grew up  in 40’s and 50’s in  SE Alabama.

Regarding Ministry, I have taught Sunday School for adult men, couples, Elementary school boys, High School coed and boys.  I was ordained as a deacon in 1968 by our Church in Baton Rouge LA., help start a Mission Church in Tiffin OH, planed and led Mission trips from 1979-2001.  Presently, I am involved with Life Church of Athens as a member of the Leadership Team and the Future’s Committee.  Also, since 2001 I have been a Member of Carpenters for Christ sponsored by Cherry Street Baptist Church in Attalla, AL.   Our team specializes in the raising of two Church buildings each year.  States I have worked in are Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Georgia.  In 2009 we will be working with Churches in Louisiana and Ohio.  Finally, since 2004, I have joined a local Gideon Camp.  Rachel as a Gideon Auxiliary member and I enjoy many of the opportunities to share Jesus using the Gideon Personal Worker Testament wherever we go and participating in the local camp events.

Favorite Things about Life Church: The unity of Spirit, to know that God’s Word is going to be preached, the love shared among the congregants for each other, the lost and for support of Missions.  The Life Groups are important to us and we participate in one in our community most of the time, but occasionally visit another in Athens.
